Vacancy Information
A 3 year PhD studentship in Healthcare Facility Management is available within the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies funded by UCLH. The studentship will be based at UCLH in the heart of the UCL Bloomsbury campus.

UCLH Studentship Description
The project will explore and analyse the processes that support the delivery of healthcare from an estates and facilities management perspective. This will include the physical buildings (including the new Cancer Centre), equipment and the human support. The project will seek to develop an optimised delivery model across UCLH Partners with support processes for performance efficiency measurement also being developed.

One of the principal aims will be to look at the possibility of linking facilities inputs to healthcare outcomes in a new and useful manner.

The project will start on 1st October 2011 and is based at UCLH Estates and Facilities and the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, UCL, Bloomsbury, London.

Eligibility
The successful graduate is expected to have at least an upper second class honours degree in any area of built environment, business studies or a related field although a Masters degree would be preferable.

Eligibility
The contest is available to all those ones: with less than 27 years old at the subscription enrolled at the 5th year of an high school or at 4th year of an artistic high school (Liceo Artistico) or achieved a high school diploma or finished the 4th year of a Liceo Artistico.

Scholarship
The Scholarships, amounting to the 100%, 50% and 20% of the attendance fee of the Bachelors, will be assigned to the three first classified in each of the four different specializations; the student will have to pay the admission fee and the EABHES tax, both for each academic year.

“Process and outcomes of patient and public involvement (PPI) in research: a natural experiment conducted through PenCLAHRC”: PCMD-GS-0042

This Studentship is based at Exeter.

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.
As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

PPI in health research is required by many research funding bodies but evidence of the impact of PPI is difficult to find. This PhD will involve tracking the progress of a range of research projects with differing forms of PPI. A number of research projects (maximum 10) will also be selected for in-depth case study analysis. Data sources will include interviews, observations and documentary material. The data will be used to develop a model of the impact of PPI in research and to draw up recommendations about the most effective ways of carrying out PPI.

The studentship will be very suitable for someone with a social sciences background (first or master`s degree) who is interested in a career as a qualitative researcher.

The stipend will be £13,590 (based on full time 10/11 rate). Tuition fees will be paid at the home rate. Assignment
The Department of Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) offers a stimulating research environment in a range of topics such as complexity theory and approximation algorithms, computer and network security, cryptography, programming languages, and formal methods. Security and safety of computer and network-based systems has been identified as an area of strategic importance.

Online Social Networks like Facebook, MySpace, Xing, etc. have become extremely popular. Yet they have some limitations that we want to overcome for a next generation of social networks: privacy concerns and requirements of Internet connectivity, both of which are due to web-based applications on a central site whose owner has access to all data. To overcome these limitations, we envision a paradigm shift from a client-server to a peer-to-peer infrastructure coupled with encryption so that users keep control of their data and can use the social network also locally, without Internet access. This shift gives rise to many research questions intersecting areas such as networking, security, distributed systems, and social network analysis - leading to a better understanding of how technology can support social interactions. The goal of this PhD project is to develop mechanisms and evaluate privacy and security issues for decentralized social networks in particular and for provider-independent personal communications in general.

The successful applicants will join one of the highly productive research teams consisting of lab and computer based scientists, led by Prof Tim Frayling, Dr Mike Weedon and Dr Anna Murray. This team has been at the forefront of genetic and genomic advances in common human diseases and traits and has jointly led discoveries of gene variants influencing obesity (Science 2007), type 2 diabetes (Science 2007, Nature Genetics, 2008), adult height (Nature 2010) and reproductive age (Nature Genetics 2009, 2010). We now seek two prospective PhD students with computing, statistical or laboratory based training - BSc or MSc in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biological disciplines, Physics or Statistics/Mathematics to undertake a range of “next generation” genetics projects including functional studies and genome wide sequencing (exome and whole genome) of large numbers of individuals with diabetes, metabolic traits and reproductive phenotypes.

Overview
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Prof. Michael Radermacher at the University of Vermont, to study the structure and function of mitochondrial and bacterial complex I by 3D electron microscopy. We have determined the structures of eukaryotic and bacterial complex I at intermediate resolutions. Now, the emergence of the first X-ray structures of bacterial complex I and first X-ray results for eukaryotic complex I open up new exciting possibilities for analyzing different conformations. The work will require biochemical preparation of samples of complex I, electron microscopy and data processing with techniques well established in the laboratory. Alternatively, depending on interest, emphasis can be placed on improvement of image processing techniques in connection with the 3D reconstruction of complex I. The candidate we are looking for must have experience in 3D electron microscopy or other biological structure determination methods (e.g. X-ray crystallography, NMR, etc.).

Our laboratory is one of the leading laboratories in 3D electron microscopy, imaging and data processing. Over the years we have developed a large number of techniques for 3D reconstruction of single particles, many of which have become standard methods. We have a large set of prior results on the structure of complex I that will help in the current research. For additional questions please contact me at the email address below.

Overview

The four-year studentship provides the opportunity for research, towards a PhD in Mathematics, on the analysis of statistical inference problems in the context of spatial tracking. The research is motivated by the problem of tracking large numbers of moving sources of radio emissions and will be undertaken in collaboration with SELEX Galileo Ltd.

Expressing the tracking problem in the framework of Bayesian statistical inference it is immediately apparent that the resulting optimisation problem will be far from convex. The posterior probability will have many local maxima and the research will pursue complexity reduction by using appropriate filters defining a hierarchy of sub-problems at different scales to enable efficient numerical solution. This research will provide the opportunity for applying developed methods to communication-band data with SELEX-Galileo Ltd.

Students with a more theoretical inclination would be invited to investigate closely related mathematical problems which are motivated by the multiscale structure of the data. High dimensional optimization problems with many local extrema can be studied with powerful tools from variational calculus, such as Γ-convergence.

A systematic application of multiscale methods to Bayesian Statistics can provide a rigorous mathematical derivation of coarse grained variables that represent some of the most important information content of the data. Project 9: Analysis of olfactory receptors of Manduca moths using RNAi, Supervisor: Prof. Bill Hansson, MPI-CE

Giant Manduca moths find their host plants to a large degree using odors. We just published the full antennal transcriptome and have access to the olfactory receptors. Here we suggest a PhD student project aimed at knocking down the expression of specific olfactory receptor proteins using virus introduced RNAi methodology. The manifestation of the knockdown will be tested in windtunnel and electrophysiological experiments.

The project will be part of the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “The Exploration of Ecological Interactions with Molecular and Chemical Techniques” in Jena, Germany. Students holding a Master`s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, ecology, entomology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and neuroethology, with a proven record of success in one of the disciplines and interest in examining ecological interactions, are eligible to conduct a doctoral project within the IMPRS.

The Research School is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research. The main focus is on the interaction between plants and animals, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions.

The Singapore Ministry of Education has established a four-year fellowship scheme for new doctoral students at NTU or NUS who will conduct their research at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre (SMART Centre).

The establishment of this Fellowship Programme is intended to attract to NTU and NUS the best and most talented doctoral students from Singapore, the region, and beyond and educate them to be future leaders in science and technology for Singapore and beyond. The Fellowship will provide them with the opportunity to be involved in the strategic research programmes at the SMART Centre and provide them with the opportunity to be co-advised by an MIT faculty member. The student may spend up to six months doing research at MIT.

The SMA3 Graduate Fellowship at SMART provides:

In the context of a recently approved important research grant (“Concerted Research Action” GOA 2012/010) of the University`s Research Fund, entitled “Number sense: Analysis and improvement” five positions for doctoral students are available. The project will start in September 2011.

The central theme of the GOA project is the relationship between (the development of) “lower-order” and “higher-order” aspects of number sense and their relationship with school mathematics. The "lower order" characterization focuses on elementary sense of numerical magnitudes, including the rapid accurate perception of small numerosities and the ability to compare numerical magnitudes. Number sense from the higher-order perspective is considered to be much more complex and multifaceted in nature, comprising knowledge of and facility with numbers and operations (see attachment for more details). One part of the GOA project will focus on Number sense in statistics: statistical literacy (coordinator: Patrick Onghena). Students with a Master of Statistics are encouraged to apply.

The combustion physics department at Lund University is well-established and internationally recognized for excellence in the measurement and development of combustion applications related to ground and aerospace combustion engines and energy production.

The department conducts a wide-array of research, together with other departments within the Lund Institute of Technology. A significant portion of the measurement and research activity is also conducted outside the university at the facilities of our industrial research partners. Our research facility was built in 2001 and currently supports the work of around 35 researchers.

Job assignments
We seek Ph.D. candidate for investigation of NOx combustion chemistry in laminar flames in H/N/O system. The Ph.D. candidate position is structured to include 85% independent research work and 15% departmental work, including teaching, course work, etc.

The overall purpose of the present research project is further development of our understanding of the key processes governing formation and abatement of nitrogen oxides in combustion with specific focus on combustion chemistry of nitrogen-containing species in laminar flames using dedicated experiments, modeling and detailed model development.

The ultimate and challenging goal is the search of the missing (unknown) reactions in the combustion chemistry of NOx and NH3. Being of research nature the present project will study almost complete range of nitrogen-containing fuels and oxidizers. With rare exceptions, burning velocities of laminar premixed flames of NxHy species as a fuel and NxOy species as an oxidizer are not available. The project is supported by Vetenskaprådet.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To be considered for these positions, the potential candidate should hold a Master´s degree in Physics or Engineering Physics or Chemical Physics from an accredited university which includes coursework in mathematics and/or physics and/or chemistry equivalent to at least 240 course points in the Swedish university system.

Basis of Assessment
Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the expected ability to perform well in the studies. The evaluation of the ability to perform well is based primarily on the results of studies at the basic and advanced levels, in particular:
Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as a broad and thorough preparation in physics. This can be documented by appended documents.
Estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on undergraduate research experiences, a masters thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a possible interview.
Skills in written and oral communication.
Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
The candidate is expected to possess the background and abilities necessary to complete the Ph.D. graduate program, as assessed by the board appointed by the Lund Institute of Technology. The selection of candidates will proceed after the assessment of all potential candidates by the board. The quality of the Master`s project work is an important factor in the determination of the most qualified candidate.

Other important factors include performance in important coursework, the focus of courses chosen by the candidate, and overall Grade Point Average. The Department of Applied Mechanics conducts research in different areas of mechanical engineering including machine and vehicle design. The research is often carried out together with national and international academic and industrial partners.

The research at the Division of Dynamics of the Department of Applied Mechanics is directed towards various vibration and wave propagation problems, often with coupling to other physical phenomena such as wear or piezoelectricity. Both fundamental and applied research is performed, and although the main thrust is towards modeling and numerical treatment. Experimental activities also play an important role.

A large part of the applied research is performed within the competence centre CHARMEC.

Job description

The Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is seeking a new PhD student to start in the autumn of 2011. The research will be conducted within the project described below.

PhD project: Improved availability and reduced life cycle cost of track switches
The project will generate increased knowledge to support product development of track switches (turnouts) with a more stable geometry and a better balanced elasticity. The aim is to reach reduced track geometry degradation by implementation of an optimised design of sleepers and resilient elements. Based on simulation, a critical assessment of different materials in rail crossings subjected to mixed traffic conditions will be performed. A numerical model for prediction of settlement in track switches will be developed. Available numerical models of dynamic interaction between vehicle and switch, and finite element calculations of strains and stresses in relevant switch components, will be used.
The project will be jointly supervised by Professor Jens Nielsen and Docent Magnus Ekh. Cooperating partners will be Chalmers University of Technology, Trafikverket, VAE GmbH, Vossloh Switch Systems Nordic AB and Abetong AB. The project will be run in cooperation with a parallel PhD project at the Division of Operation and Maintenance at Luleå University of Technology.

Required qualifications

A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on computational mechanics and structural dynamics. A strong interest in modelling, simulation and experimental validation of models is required. Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement. However, all PhD Students are expected to be able to teach in Swedish as well as in English after two years of employment. Those who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are offered courses in the Swedish language. You will be employed as a doctoral student by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your working time will be devoted to duties at the department, mainly teaching of undergraduate courses. The remaining time will be devoted to your own research and education, where the aim is to complete your PhD examination within 5 years (nominal time without Department duties is 4 years). The doctoral student will have a main supervisor, associate supervisor(s) and a project supervision board which usually consists of representatives of the academy and industry. CHARMEC`s network at the University and in the industry will be available to the doctoral student.

The RF, Communications, and Intelligent Systems (RFCIS) Group in the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering Division (MSSE) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a post doctoral (postdoc) candidate to support the intelligent systems focus area of the ORNL Cognitive Radio Program. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers actively working on signal processing and cognitive radio technologies. The RFCIS Group performs research and development (R&D) that involves robust communications in extreme environments, signal processing, and machine learning.

The group has a growing effort in learning-from-signals algorithm developments that are being applied to a wide array of applications, including multi-source signal detection and blind signal separation. The position requires a strong emphasis on applied mathematics and the selected candidate should have experience in computational intelligence, machine learning methods (e.g., kernel methods, multi-objective optimization, evolutionary computation, Bayesian belief networks, and probabilistic reasoning algorithms), learning from data, adaptive signal processing, and multivariate optimization.

The Department of Mathematics has a vacancy for a research fellow in applied and computational mathematics for a period of 4 years from August 2011. The PhD position is within the activity "Simulation of strongly heterogeneous reservoirs". The activity contains mathematical and numerical modeling of two-phase flow in heterogeneous and fractured porous media. The tasks will include new model formulations and development, testing and analysis of new discretization methods, as well as simulation on realistic reservoir data.

The working location will be at Uni CIPR (Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research). Uni CIPR is a subsidiary of Uni Research AS, a research company affiliated to the University of Bergen.

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) "The Exploration of Ecological Interactions with Molecular and Chemical Techniques" in Jena, Germany, is offering 8 PhD fellowships beginning in January 2012. Students holding a Master`s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, ecology, entomology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, neuroethology or zoology, with a proven record of success in one of the disciplines and interest in examining ecological interactions are eligible to conduct a doctoral project within the IMPRS.

The Research School is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research. The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD), www.esd.ornl.gov, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), www.ornl.gov, has an immediate opening for a post doctoral research associate in soil carbon dynamics.

The post-doc will have the opportunity to design, execute, and analyze bench and field-scale experiments to better understand mechanisms controlling soil organic matter protection and stabilization. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated background and interest in plant root inputs to soil organic matter (SOM) pools, soil aggregate dynamics, and physio-chemical mechanisms that regulate carbon accrual in SOM fractions that range in chemistry and residence time. Process-level knowledge gained in these investigations will be incorporated into carbon models at local to global scales.

Responsibilities include data collection and analysis, interpretation, and publication of experimental and modeling results in high-visibility journals. Work will be conducted in collaboration with others having expertise in plant and microbial science, soil chemistry, carbon cycle science, and modeling. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience and interest in integration of soil dynamics across temporal and spatial scales. The applicant will join others engaged in climate change research as part of the Consortium for Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Terrestrial Ecosystems (CSiTE; http://csite.esd.ornl.gov). The position will be based at ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy: evaluating the effectiveness of a novel intervention, the dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFO).

We are seeking to award a PhD studentship entitled “Pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy: evaluating the effectiveness of a novel intervention, the dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses”.
This studentship is based within the School of Health Profession, Faculty of Health and Education at Plymouth University and will be supervised by Dr Jenny Freeman, Professor Jonathan Marsden and Professor Robert Freeman (Peninsula Medical School of Medicine and Dentistry). It will be undertaken in close collaboration with DM Orthotics Ltd, Cornwall and NHS Maternity Units.

Description of the study
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is common in pregnancy, occurring in up to 70% of pregnant women. Of those affected, 25% have severe pain and 8% severe disability, such that the individual requires crutches or is unable to walk. Typically pelvic girdle pain is managed by the use of orthoses such as pelvic belts, which are thought to improve pelvic joint stability; the outcome in terms of pain reduction and improved function is, however, often poor. Recent systematic reviews highlight this limited evidence of effect and recommend that better designed studies to evaluate support belts are required. Recently, dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFO`s) have been developed for pelvic girdle pain management in athletes, with good effect. Two case reports in pregnant women with PGP provide preliminary evidence of benefits in terms of pain, function and comfort. We postulate that a customised DEFO may be more effective than other commercially available pelvic belts in managing pregnancy related PGP. This project offers you the unique opportunity to explore this hypothesis by undertaking a blinded randomised comparative clinical trial to determine relative effectiveness of this novel intervention compared to that of a standard pelvic belt, in reducing pregnancy related PGP. You will work in close collaboration with academic researchers (health care researchers and health economists), clinicians (obstetricians, midwives, physiotherapists and orthotists), and industry to develop and implement this clinically meaningful trial. You will be supported in learning all aspects of the research process, and will also have the opportunity to attend post-graduate modules to further assist this learning process.

Entry requirements
Applications are welcome from graduates with a first- or upper second-class degree in health sciences (such as medicine, physiotherapy or midwifery) or MSc in a related subject.

Applicants are asked to set out how their research issues relate to the department`s priorities and to the priorities of the research groups.

The fellowships are for a period of up to four years with teaching duties of 25 % of the post, alternativly for three years with 10 % teaching duties. Postdoctoral research fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.

Qualifications and Personal Skills
Applicants must hold degrees equivalent to a Norwegian master and doctoral degree in Law. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date.

Biogeochemical cycling of silica in Arctic ecosystems
High latitude continental ecosystems are well known as important reservoirs of organic carbon in tundra and boreal soils. Sedges and grasses account for an important part of these circumpolar carbon stores and are also recognized as accumulating vast quantities of amorphous silica. Information about the quantity, quality and characteristics of the amorphous silica accumulated in high latitude ecosystems is lacking.

These ecosystems are hypothesized to contain globally significant quantities of amorphous silica. In a warming climate as we are experiencing today, the area of permafrost is likely to be significantly reduced with potentially large quantities of dissolved silicate released during organic matter decomposition along with the nutrients N and P. Knowledge concerning changes in the flux of Si, N and P from the continents have a major bearing on ocean productivity and eventual burial of carbon in the deep ocean.

The Ph.D. project will investigate the amorphous silica content from Arctic ecosystems, particularly in boreal and tundra ecosystems. In addition, the project will link these amorphous silica stocks to those of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The Ph.D. thesis will ultimately revolve around the concept of carbon and silica stocks in Arctic ecosystems, the interpretation of these stocks in the context of climate change and permafrost thawing and the interactions with other nutrient cycles.

The project will be carried out within the framework of DEFROST, a Nordic Center of Excellence http://www.ncoe-defrost.org and is financed by the Swedish Science Council (VR).

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
The applicants are expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in natural sciences. A degree in subjects like Geology, Geochemistry, Geography or Aquatic Ecology is preferable. Documented experience in field studies is an advantage. Experience of scientific publication in English is an asset.

Basis of Assessment
Regulations for Ph.D. positions will be found in SFS regulations 1998:80 (in Swedish). This position can only be appointed to a person eligible for postgraduate studies. Particular emphasis for admission shall be placed upon the applicant`s ability to successfully complete postgraduate studies, as indicated by academic qualifications and merits. Applications are invited for a one-year Post Doctoral Research position at Queen Mary, University of London, on an EPSRC funded project with the title “Information flows and Information bottlenecks in Network Coding” in collaboration with Professor Peter Cameron from the School of Mathematical Sciences and Dr. Søren Riis from the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science.

The research area is somewhat interdisciplinary: involving the interface of Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Multi-user Information Theory and Complexity Theory.

Transport of information is fundamentally different from transport of traditional commodities, since information can be copied and transformed during transmission while ordinary commodities cannot. The main challenge is to develop techniques for handling digital information, and to use those insights and results to research long-standing open questions in circuit complexity theory.

We are interested in applications from candidates with demonstrated ability to engage in creative/ collaborative research in mathematics related to the project. We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated and are interested in a future career in research.

We would expect a successful candidate to have undertaken active research in at least one of the following areas: Circuit Complexity Theory, Network Coding, Information Theory, Combinatorics, Graph Theory and modeling internet traffic or wireless communication. However, candidates with a strong background in mathematical sciences might also be considered. At least one of the successful candidates should have good programming skills. Candidates should also be able to communicate and present research at conferences and other universities.

The overall aim of the project is to develop a capability for predicting the performance of seed processing operations, such as mixing, coating and attrition based on seed properties and the dynamics of the processing operations. Project Title: Automatic Detection of Features in Retinal Images to Improve Diagnosis of Eye Diseases
Early detection and treatment of eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy, is critical to avoid preventable vision loss. This project aims to develop computer methods (i.e., algorithms) that can automatically extract and detect feature patterns of eye diseases in retinal imaging in order to aid and improve diagnosis of eye diseases in a cost-effective manner. This project will advance the current existing diagnostic methods to include detection of features of diseases in images and classifying these into the most likely causes. As many eye-related diseases and disorders exist, we will restrict ourselves to the most common diseases, which are diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.

The candidate must hold a high-grade qualification at least the equivalent or a UK first-class honours degree from a prestigious academic institution (for example, the candidates should be demonstrably in the top 20% of PhD candidates). The candidate will be highly self-motivated and have the required skills to capture and push beyond the current state of the art in the relevant area. The candidate should have excellent mathematical and programming skills.

The candidate should also meet English language requirement (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent). Project Description
Fractured reservoirs are of interest in exploration and production of hydrocarbon and water, as well as in shallow engineering projects. Fractures may contribute significantly to porosity and permeability and thereby increase the retention and production capabilities of a reservoir or an aquifer. The distribution and properties of the fracture network control water infiltration. Fractures can also control the transport of contaminants in the subsurface; characterizing them is therefore vital in remediation strategies.

This project aims to obtain fundamental insights leading to an innovative methodology that exploits the inherent link between three key aspects – the frequency-dependent seismic anisotropy observed in multi-component seismic data, the dynamic effective medium theory, and the seismic attenuation anisotropy. The aim is to achieve a reliable characterisation of the fracture properties. The research will involve new theory developments and modelling studies, downscaled lab experiments, and field studies at analogue fractured reservoirs. A digital method recently developed jointly by TU Delft and VU Amsterdam to quantify fracture systems in the field will be used in this project. This PhD project is anticipated to have a significant societal impact and generate scientific and technological innovations.

Required Qualification
The applicant should have an MSc in (Applied) Geophysics, (Applied) Physics, (Applied) Mathematics, or Civil or Electrical Engineering. Solid quantitative skills and experience with wave propagation problems in geophysics, analytical or numerical modelling, soil/rock physics, lab experiments, or shared-earth modelling will be advantageous. Delivering Zero Carbon Homes in Cornwall: Establishing and disseminating exemplary practice of St Austell Eco-communities (Eco-town) development
University of Plymouth, School of Architecture, Design and Environment Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship. The studentship will start on 1st October 2011.

The UK Government has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 and for all new homes to achieve zero carbon from 2016. Cornwall is also facing the challenges in delivering housing supply of quantity, quality, affordability and sustainability. St Austell Eco-communities have been approved by the Government in July 2009, which set a range of challenging standards for new home-building. This project aims to establish and disseminate exemplary practice of delivering zero carbon homes of St Austell Eco-communities, to contribute to realising the Cornwall Core Strategy for 2030. The research will also contribute evidence to the theoretical debate on exemplary practice and mainstream home-building.

Four research objectives are developed:
Review the design and construction standards of zero carbon homes within the context of eco-town developments in the UK and internationally;
Examine the existing knowledge base and skills profile of zero carbon home-building, available to St Austell Eco-communities and in Cornwall;
Establish exemplary practice of zero carbon home-building, with quality, affordability and adaptability duly addressed; and
Disseminate established exemplary practice across Eco-communities development phases and other growth areas in Cornwall.
The project will lead to the establishment of the social enterprise, Exemplary Practice Network (EPN) in Cornwall for Sustainable Homes, which will continue engaging with the project partners (Cornwall Council, Cornwall Sustainable Building Trust, and University of Exeter), the developer, the Eden Project, and a network of SME and supply chains, to disseminate exemplary practice of delivering sustainable homes.

The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among the UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

We have a research studentship starting in October 2011 to work on a project entitled “Robust Optimization of Nonlinear Processes under Uncertainty”. Robust optimization studies procedures for decision making under uncertainty over time. While deterministic optimization problems include only known parameters, real-life decision problems almost invariably involve uncertain parameters. The uncertainty may arise because of future/unobservable events, measurement errors, or lack of reliable data. Robust optimization has manifold applications in financial engineering, production planning, supply chain management, fleet management, melt control, resource allocation in networks, groundwater pollution control, project scheduling, catastrophic risk management, telecommunications, power system operation, valuation of electricity generation capacity, public infrastructure investment planning, farming, computer chip design and many more. In a vast number of application areas, robust optimization has been shown to be superior to most other modelling paradigms. Many industries have recognised the value of quantitative methods for decision making under uncertainty, and major industrial companies and financial institutions are continuously seeking experts in this field.

Dynamic robust optimization problems are very hard; models need to be formulated in a clever way to facilitate their efficient solution, and dedicated approximation schemes and solution algorithms must be designed. In this project we will develop robust local and global optimization methods for important decision problems involving nonlinear dynamic processes under uncertainty. Two high impact applications will also be investigated in collaboration with our industrial partners, and the developed methods will be applied to the integrated design, optimization and control of process systems. The appointed researcher is expected to conduct high quality research towards this aim. The project builds on current work in the research groups of Dr. D. Kuhn, Prof. B. Rustem and Prof. E. Pistikopoulos.

All applicants should have at least a Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related science degree, ideally with emphasis on theoretical and applied optimisation, operationsresearch, industrial or financial engineering or control. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the following attributes:

The Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers (A&C), part of the most important technical university in Romania ‐ the University Politehnica of Bucharest ‐ is the coordinator of the FP7‐REGPOT‐2010‐1 ERRIC Project (www.erric.eu), the main objective of which is to empower existing excellence in research by unlocking its significant research potential and enhancing its national and regional leadership position in selected areas of Intelligent Information Technologies (IIT). Throughout this project, fostering high quality research in the area of A&C expertise "Cognitive and Collaborative IT for Service Oriented Robotics and Manufacturing" will lead to a comprehensive and sustainable integration of A&C into the wider European Research Area context. The A&C research laboratories group more than 120 people and dispose of several experimental platforms. The person to be hired will be integrated in the Robotics and AI Laboratory and will perform research and development activities within the SORM team (Service Oriented Robotics and Manufacturing) which comprises eight academic staff and twelve Ph.D. students.

Research activities will be carried out at the premises of the SORM team of A&C but in close collaboration with other researchers from the EU strategic partners of the ERRIC project, including short research visits to these universities.

The duration of the posts is 24 months, starting the 1st of September 2011 (or later). During this period the researcher will be employed by University Politehnica of Bucharest under a full‐time fixed‐term contract with full social security coverage.

Mission
In the frame of the ERRIC project, the experienced researcher will perform research in the field of human‐robot (HR) skills emulation: learning from visual modelling and interpretation of gestures; cognitive learning for dexterous task reproducing; surface generation through procedural motion planning and local tool shape operators. In this respect, the experienced researcher will be deeply involved in design and implementing activities, and should develop new methods, algorithms and programs for: learning by showing, vision‐based gesture modelling and mapping into motion patterns, 3D‐surface generation from depth map part and tool description. He should also develop new software applications and integrate them to existing ones. Together with the SORM team, he should publish research results in scientific journals.

Description of the position
The Department for Material Physics conducts research within surface physics and surface chemistry, thin film physics, strongly correlated systems, spintronics, nanotechnology and semiconductor physics. The position concerns basic research within “physics and chemistry of surfaces in the Grätzel cell” related to development of solar cells and organic thin films. The work comprises experimental determination of the chemical bond between molecules and oxide surfaces and how this is affected by the surface structure and composition, determination of electronic structure and optical properties and development of new preparations methods.

The work is primarily experimental and will be performed in our own scanning probe microscopy (STM) laboratory in Kista as well as at different synchrotron radiation laboratories in Sweden and abroad. Construction of new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment is an important part of the work. Good theoretical back ground is needed since advanced analysis and numerical simulations are part of the work.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria
Suitable background is a master degree in Nanotechnology, Applied Physics, Materials Physics or equivalent. Furthermore we assume that the successful applicant is strongly motivated to conduct academic research, be able to work independently and critically analyse results and have good collaborative and communicative skills. Good knowledge in written and spoken English is mandatory. Knowledge in Swedish is an advantage. These qualifications must be highlighted in the application.

Description of the positions
The silicon carbide group is part of the department Integrated Devices and Circuits at the ICT-school. We conduct experimental research in the Electrum Laboratory in Kista. Together with Uppsala University, we are starting a large project in integrated electronics in SiC for high temperatures and radiation hard environments, with up to four students placed at KTH and up to two PhD students in Uppsala (advertised separately). The main goal of this project is to demonstrate power and sensor electronic systems at 600 °C using silicon carbide (SiC) integrated circuits, also demonstrating radiation hardness.

1. Power circuit design including device modeling
Mask design of integrated circuit for power system demonstrator (DC/DC-converter etc.). Device modeling (on-wafer or packaged device measurement + Spice model extraction). Fabrication of integrated circuits. Background in power electronics required.

2. Sensor circuit design including device modeling
Mask design of integrated circuit for sensor system demonstrator (amplifier, A/D-converter etc.). Device modeling (on-wafer or packaged device measurement + Spice model extraction). Fabrication of integrated circuits. Background in analog and digital circuit design required.

3. Radiation hardness of SiC devices and circuits
Radiation hardness of the integrated circuits can be determined by controlled accelerator experiments using various ion and neutron sources. Not only the semiconductor material, but also passivation layers, encapsulation and circuit layout are important for the radiation hardness. Background in radiation physics desired.

4. High temperature metallization
Short cycle process experiments on contact metal combinations (ohmic contacts, diffusion barriers, interconnect and bonding pad). Short and long term tests at elevated temperature. Background in material physics desired.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria
Suitable background is a master degree in electronics/electrical engineering/engineering physics or within similar areas. Furthermore we assume that the successful applicant is self-motivated, curious and with a keen interest in research and experimental work. The applicant should be able to work individually and in group. We expect that the applicant has very good knowledge in semiconductor device physics and microfabrication process technology. Experience in power electronics or analog/digital circuit design is required for some projects, radiation physics or material physics is an advantage. Good knowledge in written and spoken English is mandatory and working knowledge of Swedish is a merit. These qualifications must be highlighted in the application. The evaluation will be based on how well the applicant fulfills the above qualifications.

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education in the fields of electrical engineering, systems engineering, information and communications theory, space and fusion plasma physics, and electrical power engineering. 300 people work in this creative and dynamic environment, out of which half are Ph.D. students, many from other countries. Our research projects are carried out in close collaboration with industry partners as well as with research colleagues from Sweden and other countries. The school is responsible for educating civil engineers in electrical engineering and for five masters programs which are in great demand and which have a close connection to our main fields.

The scientific and technical activities of the Electromagnetic Engineering lab include fundamental electromagnetic field theory and the physical and technical fundamentals for design of electrical devices. The lab research groups are working with electromagnetic theory, antenna design, diagnostic techniques for electrical insulation, modelling and measurement of magnetic materials and superconductors, the application of reliability centred asset management to electrical power systems, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Project description
Vapor-generating polymers in low voltage switching devices
The developments in material science are opening nowadays novel possibilities to develop more efficient, economic and reliable components in electrical power systems. This project will investigate the physics, chemistry and effects of the generation of vapor from polymeric materials used in low-voltage switching power devices (such as breakers, contactors, etc). The project is part of a multidisciplinary research initiative between KTH and industry in areas such as gas discharge physics, electrical engineering, scientific computing and material science, oriented to the improvement of switching power devices in low voltage applications. Particularly, the research work requires intensive high-power testing, chemical surface analysis of tested samples, and the development of a physical understanding of the processes involved and the effects in the performance of electrical arcs in electrical switching devices.

Overview
The School of Marine Science and Engineering is seeking to recruit a PhD student for a fully-funded PhD studentship to study extreme storm impacts on coastal systems. The studentship is tied to the research project Adaptation and Resilience of the UK Energy System to Climate Change, which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and aims to identify the challenges facing the future security of the UK nuclear energy sector and coastal energy supply in the NW region as a result of changing patterns of temperature and rainfall, sea-level rise and storms.

The studentship will focus on the collection, analysis and modelling of extreme storm response data from a number of coastal sites that are important for the UK energy supply (e.g., Bradwell, Dungeness, Heysham, Oldbury, Sellafield, Sizewell). Data will be collected over selected storm events from a range of coastal systems (tidal flat, sandy beach with dunes, gravel barrier, soft cliff) using the University of Plymouth`s Coastal Response Unit.

This unit comprises a large van equipped with a video monitoring tower, terrestrial laser scanner, quad-bike mounted RTK-GPS system and several self-logging water level monitoring devices, and can be mobilised at very short notice for coastal monitoring. The successful candidate will be largely responsible for planning and executing the field experiments, and analysing and modelling the field data, but will be assisted by an experienced and multi-disciplinary team of supervisors.

Eligibility
Candidates should have a first or upper second class honours degree in an Ocean Science, Geography or Engineering discipline. Applicants with a relevant MSc or MRes in a related numerate subject would be particularly welcome. Candidates will need to have some proven competencies in the collection (e.g., dGPS, video monitoring, wave/tide measurement) and analysis (e.g., Matlab) of coastal field data. Some expertise in numerical modelling would also be desirable.

The studentship is supported for 3 years and includes full Home/EU tuition fees plus a stipend of £13,590 per annum. The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with relevant qualifications. Applicants normally required to cover overseas fees will have to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £9,250 per annum).

Project overview
Within Cornwall there exists a significant stock of existing buildings that need to be thermally upgraded in order to increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, improve the quality of life of the occupants, and help with fuel poverty. This project aims to develop high level thermography knowledge and skills that will provide key expertise for the identification of weak points in the thermal shell of buildings. This will provide a knowledge base that will contribute to both capacity and delivery.

Thermography is an emerging technology for professionals looking at the thermal performance of buildings. Unfortunately, thermal images are often misinterpreted. This is especially true in conditions where thermal mass and moisture might have an impact on readings, for example in many Cornish period buildings like typical "stone cottages" or Victorian terraced houses. In such cases thermal behaviour shows time-lag and dampening effects, which are not visible in instantaneous thermal images, or simple interpretation of single images. This project will aim to develop a deeper understanding of the relation between thermographic single time-frame images and the ongoing transient heat-flow process where indoor and outdoor environmental conditions are in constant flux.

The project will apply thermography to existing dwellings, either within the rental sector via Penwith Housing Association, or private sector via RTP Surveyors. These partners drive the work of a series of SMEs that undertake the required upgrading of the buildings – contributing to the creation / supporting of jobs in the county. The Cornwal Development Company will help with dissemination and linkage to the micro SMEs in the construction sector.

As part of the newly established NNF Stem Cell Centre, DANSTEM, three postdoctoral positions are available in the group of Professor Bo Porse at the Finsen Laboratory, Rigshospitalet / BRIC, University of Copenhagen.

Postdoctoral areas of research
We are interested in the underlying mechanisms governing the properties of normal and malignant stem cells.

Our main focus is, very broadly, how the control of gene expression contributes to the biology of normal hematopoietic stem cells and how this control is altered in acute myeloid leukemia. Research in the group involves the use of a number of experimental systems including human patient samples as well as genetically modified mouse models. We have strong expertise in multicolor flow cytometry and use a number of genomic techniques – such as ChIP-seq to assess transcription factor binding and epigenetic configurations as well as microarray and sequencing-based (RNA-seq) gene expression profiling. Importantly, the interpretation of these data is supported by a number of “in-group” bioinformaticians as well as extensive collaborations with the neighboring Bioinformatics Centre.

Thus, the successful candidates will join a dynamic research environment with access to all modern facilities. Candidates with some experience in soft matter physics, optical trapping, instrument automation and/or biological physics are welcome. A basic knowledge of cell biology is also desirable. This is part of an International Training Network whose central theme is called `Eurocancer Stemcell Training`.

Description
This project will use mouse models to establish the cellular and molecular basis of collaboration between different classes of mutations in preleukemic and leukemic stem cells. Mutations will be targeted to different stages of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in mouse models, to investigate how different primary target cell populations impact on the cellular and molecular properties, as well as therapeutic responsiveness of leukemic stem cells.

The Fellow will work in the excellent research environment of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/ at Oxford. Yet they have some limitations that we want to overcome for a next generation of social networks: privacy concerns and requirements of Internet connectivity, both of which are due to web-based applications on a central site whose owner has access to all data. To overcome these limitations, we envision a paradigm shift from a client-server to a peer-to-peer infrastructure coupled with encryption so that users keep control of their data and can use the social network also locally, without Internet access. In these applications, the most advanced bipolar transistors will be applied. The study of these advanced electronic devices suggests a myriad of topics in semiconductor device physics. The focus of the research will be on understanding and modeling advanced bipolar transistors for future mm-wave applications. The project will contribute to the continuous development of the industrial world standard compact model for bipolar transistors Mextram (mextram.ewi.tudelft.nl).

Medical Law is a comparatively young research subject at Uppsala University, introduced to meet a growing need for research focussed on the role of law in different areas of biomedicine.

Medical Law transcends the borders of more traditional legal disciplines and deals with aspects of public law, private law, criminal law, EU law and public international law,as well as the interaction between law and ethics. Within this subject studies may concern legal aspects of rapidly developing scientific areas such as genetic diagnosis or the use of ICT in healthcare but also questions related to organisation and responsibilities in healthcare and biomedical research, as well as the status and rights of patients and research subjects. Pharmaceutical law and the regulation of forensic medicine constitute other areas of Medical Law.

An employed doctoral student shall, foremost, be devoted to his or her own postgraduate research. Other duties at the faculty which relate to teaching and administrative work may be included within the scope of the employment (to a maximum of 20%).

Two outstanding doctoral candidates are sought to undertake studies in either of the projects below. Both projects are focused on novel forms of governance that seek to address two of the greatest environmental challenges facing Australia and the international community: climate change and scarce groundwater resources.

Climate Project: Given the continuing failure of governments and multilateral treaties to deliver effective climate outcomes, this project investigates an emerging, but potentially powerful new "actorâ" in climate governance regimes both in Australia and globally. These new actors take the form of climate change civil society movements (eg Get Up, 1 Million Women, 350.org and 10-10). The project examines the circumstances under which these new movements can shape law, policy and practice (eg direct action mechanisms, lobbying and partnerships) to produce effective and legitimate climate outcomes. The project aims to develop principles to guide these new movements to better influence climate law regimes and deliver improved climate outcomes.

Groundwater Project: This project responds to the recent call for a "water reform revolution" to empower communities to collaboratively manage water buy-back and entitlements in Australia. The project will examine the circumstances under which collaborative forms of groundwater management are likely to be effective both as a standalone governance approach and as a component of wider legal and regulatory systems. It aims to provide necessary guidance and prescription to policy makers so they can deliver this "revolution" and mobilise collaborative groundwater governance to achieve improved environmental outcomes for Australia.

The successful applicant will join an innovative team of researchers at Macquarie Law School who are undertaking inter-disciplinary research on contemporary issues related to legal governance and public policy.

There is a possibility that suitable candidates will spend a period of time travelling within Australia and overseas to conduct empirical research on civil society movements or examples of collaborative groundwater governance.

As a doctoral student, you will develop expertise in cutting edge environmental law and governance theory, gain experience in research design and methods (eg interviewing), and produce insights that may lead to improved environmental and social outcomes in practice.

Job description
Over the years, governments and stakeholders have taken measures against poor dietary habits, but with limited success. The reason for this is that many consumers value instant gratification of a high fat and sugar content, over avoiding long-term negative health consequences associated with the consumption of such unhealthy food products. Producers value short-term profit over a more risky strategy of converting to responsible products that, although they might sell less on the short term, have the potential to strengthen corporate reputation in the longer run.

From a societal perspective this lock-in situation is undesirable. The current project contributes to solving the problem by incorporating segmented social marketing strategies and corporate social responsibility into an innovation systems perspective. The supply side is viewed as a set of heterogeneous firms among which segments can be distinguished with specific preferences, norms and values. The overall objective is to find conditions under which these firms have the incentive to behave in a socially responsible manner.

For this project we seek a PhD student who needs to identify:

The meaning of social responsible behavior for the supply side in the food system.
The factors that shape the choice of displaying current behavior over societal responsible behavior for various segments identified on the supply side.
The conditions under which these segments are most likely to display societal responsible behavior.

The researcher is expected to use different research strategies, such as interviews and literature searches. Further, specific segments of firms need to be identified based on stated choice experiments and revealed behavior.

The PhD is part of a larger project funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) within the Responsible Innovation Theme (MVI). The project is based at the Innovation Studies group, of the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. Innovation Studies is widely known for its research on breaking existing technological regimes. The current project is supervised and managed by Prof. Dr. Marko Hekkert and Dr. Frank van Rijnsoever. Wageningen University will co-supervise.

The PhD student will be collaborating with another PhD student based at Wageningen University who researches demand side preferences and with a senior researcher who focuses on policy measures. It is expected that this research will deliver several high quality papers in respected scientific journals.

Requirements
Candidates hold a M.Sc. (or equivalent) degree in a relevant field (e.g. innovation studies, economics geography, marketing, economics, business, business ethics, management, or a relevant field in psychology). Candidates have an interest in corporate social responsibility and firm behavior in the international food market. Experience with quantitative methodology is a must, qualitative research experience is preferred. Advanced knowledge of English both in reading and writing is required. Finally, it is recommended that candidates have proven experience with applied or food ethics.

Conditions of employment
The project is a fulltime PhD position (0.8 fte is an option) for a period of 12 months (Utrecht University), which is extended to a PhD trajectory of 4 years in total upon favorable evaluation. The gross monthly salary increases from € 2,042 in year 1 to € 2,612 in year 4, according to the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. Secondary benefits include e.g. a pension scheme, flexible employment conditions, holiday bonus (8%) and end-of-year bonus (8,3 %). UNIL Master`s Grants
To facilitate access to Master`s degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne makes available around ten Master`s grants which are awarded on a competitive basis.

Deadline: December 15, 2011

Programmes concerned
Candidates must choose a Master`s programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master`s degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Amount and duration of the grant
The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.

Required conditions:

In the event of a positive decision, the application is forwarded by the SASC to the UNIL Faculty responsible for the Master`s on which the candidate wishes to be enrolled. The Faculty selects applications and notifies the SASC of its opinion based on the candidate`s qualities, motivation and suitability for the Master`s programme. The SASC forwards shortlisted applications to the selection committee which will award grants to students meeting all criteria according to the available budget.

Decisions are not open to appeal.

Selection criteria
The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master`s. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master`s degree.

The FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) "RELATE" provides an opportunity for young researchers to study the latest technologies, platforms and tools in the area of engineering and provisioning of service-based Cloud applications. The ITN consists of seven leading European research institutes and five associated partners. The ITN will organize regular workshops and summer schools, so that the trained Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) - PhD candidates, and Experienced Researchers (ERs) - PostDocs, can exchange research experience, insights and ideas.

A total of 21 fellows, 18 ESR fellows who will register for PhD degrees and three ER fellows, will be recruited. Through an integrative and multidisciplinary research approach, RELATE will promote the advancement of the state-of-the-art in the related areas of model-driven engineering and formal methods, service-based mash-ups and application integration, dependability, performance and trust in service-based cloud applications, as well as quality management and business model innovation.

Project Title:

Economic Impacts of EU`s Preferential Trade Agreements on Developing Countries

Project Description:

The aim of this PhD project is to analyse economic impacts of preferential trade agreements between the EU and the chosen developing countries. GLOBE computable general equilibrium model and the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) representation of Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) database will be used to simulate various trade liberalisation scenarios, depending on the contents of the preferential trade agreements. The main focus will be on economic effects of such preferential trade agreements on developing economies.

Depending on the applicantnt`s research interests, developing countries chosen can either be i-)Latin American, ii-) African or Asian economies. When deciding about the developing countries, the student needs to make sure that they are in Global Trade Analysis Projectâ€™s (GTAP) database, which is the main database that will be used for this project. Applicants will need to justify their choice of developing countries during the application and interview processes. They will produce a research proposal of not more than 2,000 words that outlines and justifies the proposed research question, identifies any additional data requirements and details the proposed work programme.

Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.
